As children age their habits solidify and become much more difficult to change.  Good nutrition and plenty of physical activity are key to a young child’s growth and development.  The early years of childhood – from birth to age 5 – is a critical period for the development of these healthy behaviors that can have a lifelong impact on a child’s quality of life.

Many children are in a childcare setting, often for several hours each day.  Because of this, the child care environment and providers play an important role in helping children in their care develop healthy eating and physical activity habits that will last a lifetime.

5-2-1-0 Goes to Child Care is a program aimed at increasing healthy eating and physical activity in early child care programs by supporting environmental and policy change. The program is based on the following easy-to-remember 5-2-1-0 message:

The 5-2-1-0 Goes to Child Care toolkit is based on 6 key evidence-based strategies that can be used individually or collectively in after school programs to address the policies, practices, and environment that influence healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Our hope is that 5-2-1-0 Goes to Child Care will help support child care programs in raising and educating a healthier generation of children!

Are you a child care center who has partnered with Let's Go! Gulf Coast?

These resources are here to supplement your toolkit.  Resources are organized into the '6 Strategies for Success.'  Under each section, there is information specific for childcare centers and information that can be easily distributed to parents.  The 'Parent Handouts' can also make great signs to hang around your center and rotate in-and-out!
